Metro!

The first line of the Moscow Metro opened in 1935 and was presented to the world as a major achievement of the Soviet State. It was completed ahead of schedule thanks to the extraordinary commitment from the workers who built it, in keeping with the Soviet five year plan ethos. While the Metro’s primary purpose was urban transport, the tunnels were built exceptionally deep – over 80 metres in places – in anticipation of aerial bombardment.
